What is mouthwash and what does it do?
Mouthwash is a liquid that can be used to help remove food debris and plaque from around the tooth. You place a cap full of mouthwash into your mouth and swirl it around for the required time before spitting it out.
Mouthwash is used for a variety of different reasons, either to freshen breath, to help prevent gum disease, reduce plaque and tartar and to also help prevent tooth decay and is recommended by dentists.
Brushing and flossing alone does not always remove bacteria that has formed around the teeth, research has shown that using mouthwash can help to reduce plaque by up to 25%.
Reasons for using mouthwash
- Freshen Breath
- Prevent gum disease (Gingivitis)
- Help prevent tooth decay
- Reduce plaque & tartar that forms on the teeth
Do I Need Mouthwash?
Depending on your dental needs you may require a mouthwash as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. If you find you have bad breath a mouthwash is a great way to freshen it up, but if you constantly suffer from bad breath you should see your dentist. It is important to remember that using a mouthwash alone won’t replace the need for brushing and flossing.
