COMMON BRACE PROBLEMS

What are Braces?

Braces can be fixed or removable. Braces are designed to change the current position of the teeth. Many patients have braces to close spacing, correct over crowding or to simply improve their smile. Teenagers are most common to have braces but in recent times adults are now seeking more and more braces treatments. Braces can take a conventional approach or a purely cosmetic approach.

What are the common brace problems?

Braces whether fixed or removable can cause the following problems.

  1. Gingivitis

Gingivitis in simple terms means inflammation of the gums. This is where the patient may experience bleeding and soreness. In extreme cases they may develop swelling of the gums. Inadequate brushing and oral hygiene due to the brace getting in the way of effective tooth cleaning usually cause gingivitis.

The use of floss, tepe interdental brushes and an electric tooth brush can improve the oral hygiene. It may be necessary to brush your teeth and braces more than twice per day. Visiting a hygienist is highly recommended while you have braces to ensure optimum oral hygiene is achieved.

  1. Demineralisation

Demineralisation is where the tooth surface becomes weaker due to acid attack. This can leave a white or brown discolouration of the tooth surface and leave the tooth more susceptible to dental decay.

It is very important to avoid highly acidic and sugary foods while you have your braces on. The use of a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash are clinically proven to help strengthen the tooth surface and prevent further acid attacks.

  1. Sensitivity

Tooth Sensitivity is where pain is felt on having hot and cold drinks. This can be due to the enamel breaking down or simply a change in the gum structure around the tooth surface. This can lead to the exposure of the porous root dentine. Special toothpastes high in fluoride can help to reduce the effects of tooth sensitivity.

  1. Plaque

Plaque is a biofilm of bacteria that can build up on the tooth surface. This is produced from food and inadequate oral hygiene. There is an important need for patients to brush effectively as the build up of tartar can lead to dental tooth decay and even gingivitis.

Brushing after every meal and using more than just your regular toothbrush can help ensure you are effectively removing the plaque bio film to protect the teeth and gums.

  1. Tartar

Tartar is simply plaque that has solidified onto the tooth surface. This is near impossible to remove with normal brushing aids and will need to be professionally cleaned with the help of a hygienist or dentist. Braces make brushing close to the gum line very challenging and this is where majority of the plaque and calculus stick. Tartar can go onto discolour and become unsightly when smiling.

Visit your hygienist regularly to ensure adequate tooth cleaning is carried out whilst you have your braces on.
